Thoughts about reconnecting with the Holy Spirit
A while back our church did a series called Reconnect. I really enjoyed the series and I wrote down some thoughts in my Morning Pages. I came across them today and thought I'd share them here.
Reconnect
With what matters most
Jesus
... And one way we connect is with the help of the Holy Spirit.
During the weeks we listened to the Reconnect Series at our church, I started having a picture in my head of the role of the Holy Spirit in my life and began to be more aware of its presence at all times. I began to become more aware and glimpsed a bit of what I've heard and known before - that the spirit in us helps us to pray, helps us to surrender. The spirit knows how to pray, how to connect with God the father without the distractions that our human minds have such difficulty overcoming.
You know the way we always wonder if the voice in our head is just talking to itself? We sometimes wonder if we're praying to God or if we're just talking to ourselves? Well, when I allow the Holy Spirit to work in me I feel like that's the connection I needed to make sure that I'm not just talking to myself. I realized that I haven't always been aware of the spirit "in" me, but it was - it is.
The image of noticing it or becoming more aware of it reminded me of houses or other objects we see every day for years on end and never really notice them. Then one day - bam! - there it is. It's been there all along but we really are seeing it for the first time. At least our conscience is noticing it for the first time.
When someone tells us that the spirit live in us and we know it but don't notice it is like people saying take a right at the house on that road on the left and you say what house? You know they say - that little blue house that sits back in the tree line with the wind mill. What??? And even the next time you drive by there you don't even think to look for it because your mind is on the road and the day ahead or on the worries of the day, week,, month. I think that sometimes we do that with the Holy Spirit too. We know, we are reminded but we still don't take time to notice the presence. And then one day we do. And what a difference it makes. We may not always look at the little blue house on the side of the road any more often than before but we do know it's there - with a different kind of "knowing" than before. And I bet that we do look that way a little more often and remember how strange it was to notice it for the first time while realizing it was there all along.
I think when we have the experience of noticing the Holy Spirit and sensing the real presence of it we are more certain that we aren't just talking to ourselves in prayer. We have a confidence that the power we sense inside of us is something much greater than ourselves. It brings a hope and peace that is so comforting. And the more we experience that, the more we yearn for it. The Holy Spirit is what helps us reconnect - over and over and over again - daily.

"And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don't know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words."
Romans 8:26
