Hello! Today is:

SEE WHAT'S NEW!

Yesterday was Friday; it was a Friday that John was off work and we did a rare thing. We spent the day together just the two of us. It started out with John donating blood, then we went to lunch and shared a light meal. Afterward we decided to go to Sam’s to pick up a few things. Not something John would typically have agreed to do. He hates shopping even more than I do, which is saying a lot. While we were there one of our daughters called us and when she asked us what we were doing, I replied we’re practicing retirement. I realized that was actually a very apt answer. In  that moment, I realized this is what retirement could look like, and I wasn’t sad about that. It felt pretty good. A little foreign maybe, but good.

I recently adjusted my attitude about our current circumstances and decided that the cosmetic things that we want done in the house will get done or they won’t, but I don’t need to fret about them all the time. I’d much rather have him home than working a job that’s sucking a life out of him in order for us  to do cosmetic updates to the house that are not necessary. The things that are really important we can manage even if he retires. But the whole idea that we didn’t need to rush home to get a list of things done and we had the day to ourselves to do anything we wanted was, quite frankly, very liberating. It was an invitation.

I think we’ll keep practicing until we get really good at it and then we might just get in the game. I guess you could say we’ll get out of the game, but the last thing I want to do is sit on the bench on the sidelines. I want to change the game. Or maybe a better metaphor would be that we want to move to the next round. LOL. I don’t know. I’m not much of a sports person to be honest. Maybe I should have  found a metaphor that was more like the garden. Our life together has been like preparing the ground, planting the seeds, fertilizing, pruning, weeding, and doing our best to nurture the beautiful garden. We don’t want to miss the most spectacular blooms at the end of the season.

They say practice makes perfect. I hope it’s true!
