Epiphany #3
This one will take longer and will probably be a collection of posts.
Perhaps this is not so much an epiphany but rather an increasing understanding that has been growing for a while now and found its most recent energy this morning on my way home from dropping my daugher off at the farm she loves so much. I had a brief conversation with the friend who is supervising her while she rides her beloved horses. The thoughts it provoked dovetailed with a conversation I'd had just the evening before with another friend.
The topic of both conversation was coops - cooperative learning environments in this case. Robin mentioned that one of the issues she has with some cooperatives is that rather than allow individuals to use their unique talents to benefit the entire group they are subject to guidelines that require they do things that are not related to their special gifts or interests and, in many cases, even require them to do things they don't even enjoy. I've been thinking about that and I agree with her. The conversation this morning provided even more food for thought and may have even brought about some clarity for me personally.
I will be spending some time trying to discover what gifts I believe God has given me and what he expects me to do with them. The first three that came to mind to explore are my interest and love for 1) communication (of all sorts) 2) hospitality 3) gardening.
My love and skills for communication are partly evident in the fact that I am the creator and moderator for so many Yahoo Groups. I love this tool and I think it was a brilliant gift to virtually any group that desires efficient communication. It certainly won't work for every group for every need but it meets the needs of so many that I am just amazed.
Hospitality came from first thinking it was just a love for cooking but it really is so much more. I love to cook and I especially love to cook for MANY. But I also love to plan gatherings, every aspect of gatherings. I love to prepare for company with the thought of making them feel at home in our home. I love to organize parties and luncheons and meetings.
Gardening - need I say more? John and I just love to plant seeds and watch them grow. I think this started with the fact that we knew we wanted 10 kids. We each knew this before we were ever married. We love to nuture and watch things grow! Although, it would be nice if the kids and the grass could slow their rate of growth a bit - the kids so we can enjoy their youth longer and I guess it could be said the same goes for the grass - so we can enjoy our youth a little longer :-)
Mind you, I didn't say that these talents have been developed well. I just said I believe they may be the gifts God gave me. It's now time to further explore and develop them. A good start would be the Master Gardener Class I am considering taking and the cooking classes I told my daughter and her friends I would do with them. I think I woud like to take a cooking class myself!!
