Why?
Why, one might ask, would Susan post a poem on her blog? A poem that she did not write anyway... The answer is, I don't know. I just wanted to share something that I love. This is and has been my favorite poem to recite to my children since the first time I ever read it.
I remember riding in the car with a friend of mine when I was about twelve or thirteen. She had a younger brother and to help keep him occupied she was reciting all these cute little poems and rhymes from memory. Stuff I had never heard before and I was pretty impressed. I felt sad and curious at the same time. It was obvious that she knew them because someone had recited them to her at some point and often enough that she comitted them to memory. I was curious to know why. Of course, now I understand.
I don't recall ever being read to as a child until I was in school and then I remember some of my teachers reading to the whole class aloud. I don't know if I don't recall my parents reading to me because I was too young or if they just didn't read to me. Since I recall details from my childhood very clearly, freakishly so my mother says, I am guessing it is because it wasn't something that happened in our house.
I need to read even more to my kids...

Susan,
ReplyDeleteI loved the poem. I thought it was great. Your post got me thinking... I do read quite a bit to my kids and I was read to quite a bit, well, until I could read I was read to. BUT I rarely read them poetry or rhymes or things like that.
This is a great reminder to me to do more of that. Maybe I could even do something silly like, "Lines at Lunchtime." And always read a poem or two at lunchtime. I bet the kids would like that. After all we always do Bible at Breakfast! ;)
Yes, do read more to your children! The memory of my brothers and I being read to by my mom are vivid and comforting. To this day, I love being read to and I'm almost 48! When I'm doing mindless chores I listen to books on DVD from the library.
