And so it begins...
the weeding! The seedlings are already popping up through the soil. Planting was complete (amost) last Saturday and the week of sunshine and rain has been a perfect combination for a good start.
We added a few things to our collection: two new grape plants, three raspberry, two blackberry and two blueberry plants! We do have a few things that didn't make it into the ground last week and we'll have to wait for it to dry up a bit before getting them in but we are running on schedule so far so we should be good to go. Corn, zucchini, yellow squash, watermelon, pumpkin, cucumber will all be added below the hill out of the beds. These plants really don't do as well in raised beds as they do in an open field - imagine that! I plan to plant the squash inside a collar of ice cream buckets, 2-liter soda bottles or milk jugs to project them from borers and mowers :-) The squash borers have been a problem the last two years ending their growing season very early and very abruptly. I really hope to avoid that this year. I purchased many straw bales early on and they are waiting in the garage to mulch around the beds but more importantly for our hopeful field of pumpkin and watermelon. We have a plan - it's a good one - and I really pray that it works well.
I never did get around to planting a sunflower house last year but I am absolutely determined to do it this year. I have all the seeds and am going to plant them inside protective collars as well to make sure they get a good start without the threat of mower injury.
I'd love to include some photos but it's rainy and chilly out today so it will have to wait for the sunshine to come out.
