Don't just do something, sit there!
You read that right, didn't you? It's not what we're used to hearing. Most of us grew up hearing someone or several someones telling us, "Don't just sit there, do something!" The voice urging us in this manner may have been, more often than not, our own. One of the best lessons I've learned in the past four years has been that I don't have to respond right away to pretty much anything - unless it's life threatening, of course. I can take time to think about it. Maybe time is needed to temper the initial surge of emotional response that comes naturally. Maybe time is needed to really ponder how I feel about the issue at hand and sometimes time is needed to separate feelings from facts. I can honestly say this is the case nearly all of the time.
Learning how to hold ones tongue is actually very empowering. These days, learning how to sit on ones fingers is just as important - maybe even more so. With technology today, much wisdom and self-control is necessary to avoid occasions of impulsive public and personal attacks that we will often regret later (or the moment our finger hits the post button).
It's amazing how our opinions and perspectives can change over time. If our time is cluttered with debating about things we haven't even settled on in our own minds it will benefit us if we are able to step back and prayerfully consider these things before we "just do something".
Just thinking here in my space.
